Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), which translates to Safe Motherhood Scheme, is a program launched by the Government of India in 2005 to incentivize institutional births among pregnant women, particularly in rural areas. The scheme aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates by providing financial assistance to expecting mothers who deliver in accredited healthcare facilities.

Here's a breakdown of the JSY scheme:

  • Eligibility: All pregnant women in India are eligible for JSY benefits, irrespective of their age, number of children or income status.
  • Benefits: The program provides cash assistance to mothers who deliver in government hospitals or accredited private healthcare facilities. The amount varies depending on the location of the delivery:

    • Rural areas: ₹1400 (around $17 USD)
    • Urban areas: ₹1000 (around $12 USD)

  • Implementation: JSY is a centrally sponsored scheme, meaning the central government funds the program entirely. The state governments are responsible for implementing the scheme through their health departments.

The JSY scheme has played a significant role in increasing institutional deliveries in India, contributing to a decline in maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
